Kinect for the Xbox 360 (“You are the controller!”) is a must-have this holiday season … at least that’s what Microsoft is hoping. But so far there really aren’t any “killer apps” compelling people to buy. Fortunately, enterprising gamers around the world are creating their own.

Upon its debut earlier this month, programmers immediately began tinkering with the Kinect, modifying the full-body motion-sensing device to control a Web browser with the wave of a hand, project shadow puppets and even wield a lightsaber. Microsoft says it’s okay with users hacking Kinect – which is smart, because now they can sit back and wait for someone else to come up with great new ideas for their product.

A user named Yankeyan created what might be the most amazing yet: he programmed his Kinect, with a Nintendo emulator, to create a version of “Super Mario Bros.” that puts you in the role of Mario – jump when you want Mario to jump, move left when he should move left, etc. A fine tribute to the Italian plumber’s 25th anniversary.

Kinect … for Nintendo?
